What is Dental Anxiety?

Have You Been Avoiding Dental Appointments?

Do you have a deep fear of the dentist and needles, or shame about seeing a dentist because you may be judged? We call this dental anxiety.

Dental anxiety can have many different symptoms:

  • Bad memories of past experiences
  • Fear of pain in the dental chair
  • Fear or needles or drills
  • Anxiety triggered by the sounds, smells, and bright lights associated with dental visits
  • Shame over neglected dental care
  • The vulnerability of being a patient: e.g., having another person’s hands in your mouth, being unable to speak.
  • Feeling jittery or on-edge in the dental chair
  • Stubbornness in rejecting dental intervention
  • Being “too busy” for the dentist
  • Hiding dental pain from your family
  • Avoiding thinking about or talking about your dental health

Since tooth decay and gum disease can advance rapidly, delaying dental treatments makes you vulnerable to serious dental problems. Many patients who suffer from dental anxiety wait until a toothache is severe before going to a dentist, and therefore require more complex and expensive dental treatments.
If you or a loved one suffers from this type of anxiety, please know that it is nothing to be ashamed of. We can help. We are ready and able to help you get the care you need–without worry, without stress, and without pain.

What Can Dr. Paul do for Your Dental Anxiety?

At Paul Chon, DDS, patient comfort is our number one priority. We understand that we can’t be an effective partner in your oral health unless you are comfortable during a dental appointment.

If you can bring yourself (or your family member) through the door, we guarantee Dr. Paul will listen to your concerns without judgment and will never force treatment.

Dr. Paul will engage in a talk-only appointment until you feel comfortable proceeding. Sleep dentistry/IV sedation is often an excellent solution if you want treatment but are overcome by fear. If not, you’ll find our office helps reduce dental anxiety in other ways.

How We Manage Anxiety During Your Appointments

When you make an appointment with Dr. Paul Chon, you will experience a stress- and anxiety-free visit. If you don’t want to know or see what’s happening, we can initiate IV sedation treatment soon after you arrive, so you don’t have to experience any of your familiar anxiety triggers.

Patients who opt for IV sedation can “check out” whenever they please, and will wake up feeling glad the appointment is over.

You Are in Good Hands

Dr. Paul has spent years becoming qualified to perform IV sedation. We will screen your for sedation candidacy before the treatment, and ensure you are safe before, during, and after sedation. We use all the standard industry tools to monitor your vital signs during sedations, such as electrocardiogram, heart rate and blood pressure monitors, and blood oxygen level/carbon dioxide level monitors.

Advanced Technology Offers Greater Comfort

If you choose not to elect for sedation dentistry, we have a number of tools in our office that can help you avoid the triggers of dental anxiety. The advanced dental technology we use in our office provides our patients with comfortable, gentle treatments.

Laser treatment is used during cleanings to remove tartar and clean below gum line. Tooth sensitivity is reduced and teeth/periodontal cleaning into a gentler experience. No metal scraping tools need to be used with laser dentistry.

3D cone beam CT scan is absolute necessity when performing implant dentistry, root canal treatment, and Invisalign clear braces, as it provides a clear picture of the facial anatomy and dental health. This tool lets us work faster and get you home quicker.

Digital panoramic x-rays are the safest option and give off the lowest radiation, while giving us the necessary radiographic images of your teeth.

Digital dental photographs are taken of your entire face, mouth and teeth. Digital Photography is used to show detailed conditions of your teeth and is great communication tool for patients. Knowing and seeing what is happening in your mouth can alleviate fear of the unknown.
